Acupuncture and What it Can Help Treat

Dr. del Castillo provides acupuncture treatment as a method to help many of his patients. He believes it can bring many of his patients improved health. Acupuncture has been gaining popularity in western medicine as a way to treat many common conditions. It has been integrated into many hospitals throughout the United States. In 2008, Dr. del Castillo trained in San Francisco with Dr. Tsun-Nin Lee in his extensive course for physicians through the Academy for Pain Research and also spent six weeks in training at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai, China.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. It is only one of many tools used to aid in the health and well-being of people. It is founded on established, objective principles of Chinese medicine, which have been described and used for about 3000 years.

The usual treatment with acupuncture entails placing needles in prescribed points along what have been called channels or meridians. Needles are sterile and utilized only one time. There is very little discomfort at the time of placement of needles. A usual acupuncture treatment lasts about 20 to 30 minutes. For most medical problems, a series of treatments is necessary. For many chronic problems, longstanding treatment is used.

What Can I Expect?

We offer you an opportunity to have a free consultation to learn more about acupuncture and ask any questions you may have about the treatment. We want you to be totally comfortable with your acupuncture treatment.

If you are ready to start treatments we can set up your appointment with Dr. del Castillo over the phone or in person. At the start of your appointment with Dr. del Castillo he will have a deep discussion about your chief concern and other health history. He will check your pulse and observe your tongue, both cornerstones of Chinese medical diagnosis. He will then place acupuncture needles as necessary. Usually the needles are in place for about 20 - 30 minutes. This will vary. Here's a great video that shows Dr. del Castillo treating someone for back pain.

What Does Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture is not meant to replace well-proven Western medical treatments but in fact to help in already established treatments and hopefully aid in recovery. In some instances, patients can reduce the number and type of medications depending on their disease states. At other times, more aggressive Western therapies can be avoided with the use of acupuncture treatment.

A very frequent question is whether acupuncture will work for a specific medical condition. The World Health Organization several years ago listed a number of “western” medical conditions where acupuncture seems effective.

"I have been dealing with anxiety for a couple of years, someone told me acupuncture could help me. "About three years ago, I developed a condition known as 'Bell’s palsy.' My facial muscles on my left side went numb and were paralyzed. I had no control over my face. Luckily, my boss is an M.D. who practices acupuncture. He did a series of treatments that made the difference between just being OK to an amazing improvement that now people can’t tell that I had that condition. The people that know about it are in disbelief at how my face recovered completely. I can honestly say that Dr. del Castillo and acupuncture saved MY SMILE!" ~ Nora M., actual patient

"I went to Dr. del Castillo seeking treatment for shoulder pain and his acupuncture treatments really fixed things without pain medication. The treatment was comfortable and very relaxing too!"~ T. T., actual patient
